Ferret and I went to see "Queen of the Damned" Tuesday night.

Oh. My. God.

They really really REALLY really shouldn't have bothered.

The music wasn't bad. And it was a lot of fun to see The Vampire Lestat on stage.

But..come on.
Not a single actor even had the right color HAIR, fer cryin' out loud!!!!

Lestat has absolutely no sense of humor.
He's completely, utterly, PAINFULLY vanilla.
He's completely straight.
He's boring.
He's a good rock star, but a very bad Lestat.

cast shots:

Marius is so very very VERY wrong.
(..I confess to yelling, "BULLSHIT!!" when he stands on stage with Lestat and friggin' *applauds*...gag.)
Armand is the right age, but that's the only thing going for him.
Louis is MIA. *rage*
Gabrielle is, too. *rage* (unless she's the non-speaking blonde woman at the end of the flick..in which case, *YAWN*)
Pandora wasn't badly cast, but they FRIGGIN' KILL HER OFF!!!
David's too young.
Jessie's ok, but too doe-like; and the way they turn her strikes me as yet another character betrayal.
Akasha is beautiful - but I really wanted, after a while, to yell, "STOP WRIGGLING ALL OVER THE PLACE!! Geeeeeez, stand still for a SECOND, won't you?"
Maharet isn't bad, but Mekare is COMPLETELY cut; Maharet's eyes are normal vampire eyes; the role of these red-headed twins is completely taken out of the vampire mythology. Instead, by the end, Maharet is made out to look suspiciously like a Mother Mary image. *gag*

Basically, Anne Rice's carefully-crafted mythology is blown all to hell.
The root of Akasha's insanity and personality is completely missing. Gone is the subplot of female power - there's a whisper of it, true, in her control of Lestat, but it's such a faint whisper, compared to what it should be.

Gick.
Major major gick.

I left the theatre thinking, 'Ok. Maybe they'll make it for real in a few years and explain this one away, like with the Highlander movie series..'

Even the marketing is a failure. C'mon, Tower Records is all over the damn movie...wouldn't you think that every friggin' CD store around should be saturated in The Vampire Lestat stuff?? I went looking last night, and couldn't find a single copy of the damned soundtrack, let alone any merchandise!

Pah.
I'm such a very unhappy fan.

Why the frig did they even bother?

Well...reading "The Vampire Lestat" and "Queen of the Damned" may take a while. "Queen," especially, has a lot going on.

If you go to see it, please let me know what you think! I'm very willing to admit I'm probably biased because of my reading. :)

(I've also written for "Happy Halloween" about Anne and her books a few times now...I wish they were online, I'm fairly happy with them. My editor and I tried like hell to get me an interview with the lady, too..*growl*..)

Do they have 'em in cliff notes ;)

hehehe....

wish I had time to read things other then text-books... I miss reading for fun...

I know little to nothing about vampire myths, but myths in general I have always liked... I LOVED our mythology (greek and roman) unit in high school, darn them fro doing nothing on vampires or other such creatures....

Don't think the PTA would have approved that!!! HAHAHA!

When I see it (might be awhile, might have to wait for VHS) I'll let you know what I think about it

too bad about the interview....... :(

Quote from the mentioned website
. If you are looking for a word for word adaption, you will be disappointed. If you expect all your favourite characters (and their appearances) to be true to the book, you will be disappointed. However, if you are looking for a vampire movie based on Anne Rice's book, that will entertain you... hop on baby!
