Buffy obsessions

Me:
I was thinking about the fact that they have emasculated Spike so much in
the past few seasons. Fact, at least, IMHO.
- He can't kill humans.
- He got re-involved with the fluffy Harmony.
- He had to rely on humans he hates (the Scoobies).
He's still giving up power to Buffy, in that he's her dirty little secret and, from what he said during the Invisible Buffy episode, that's not really what he wants. It's interesting - and almost a relief - to see him finding power again.
I ended up muttering at the screen a few times during this week's episode, "Didn't Faith teach you anything?" Buffy changed last season, during her relationship with Riley; she's been mixing killing, passion, and sex for some time now. But it's easier to say it's someone else's fault than to accept ownership of what's inside you. She would be more comfortable being "the old Buffy" than with figuring out who "the new Buffy" is. I think that the conversation with Spike about redecorating her room hinted at this, at the knowledge on some level that she has to grow up.
The bit with Katrina was an interesting parallel. Katrina didn't want to give up power; she died because she fought back, because she wasn't giving control to anyone. She said no; she believed "no"; it could be said her whole 5 seconds of Buffy-universe time was spent showing the strength of her "no."
Buffy, on the other hand, isn't saying no.
I wonder if Joss meant for that dichotomy to be in place, or if that observation is the result of my obsessive mind? :O :)

Dusti, you have incredible insight and you never cease to amaze me. I think compared to you I've lead a very limited life....
Your insights on Buffy are very powerful. And you're right, Buffy is having a hard time dealing with her changes/desires. OMG...she DOES need a visit with Faith!

I think in part because her comment about me connects to one Jason made last night. People seem to be...overly impressed with the weight of my past.
