Greenfax isn't free, but it's very cheap, and pretty good. You email attachments to an address, and it gets faxed to the destination. You receive faxes as PDF file attachments. Fairly nifty, actually.
Well, on my windows machine, and the old one, one of the printers on offer is Fax or MS Fax. I don't use it any more as I have a real fax machine, but IIRC, you print to that, the driver asks for the number and away you go.
