(Curiosity inspired by
rm.)
I worked as a dog walker in Philly for a short, mostly-torturous time. One of my favourite clients was an older gentleman that lived on a side street near Olde City...he was gracious and interesting, and my private nickname for him was The Man with a Houseful of Gods, because his first floor was pleasingly cluttered with a bewildering collection of mostly-Christian religious statues and paintings, ranging from the gorgeous to the gleefully tacky (though more heavily weighted towards the former).
When I was a child the only person I knew with religious symbols in the home was my paternal grandmother, and she had several buddhas. It is an eccentricity I wish I'd asked her about, as when we we were reunited in my adulthood these statues were gone and the rich red decor she'd once preferred had been replaced by drab olive green. The few times I've been able to visit her grave, I've left her small buddhas rather than flowers.
Until recently, I was not the kind of person that had an interest in collecting religious images. That has changed, and I can't really pinpoint why. I partially credit/blame The Man With a Houseful of Gods, and I partially blame/credit the way Kali haunted me for much too long until I started to acknowledge Her with small bronze images.
In my home, I have some statues of Bodhisattvas, several small ones of Kali, a dancing Ganeseh, an Indian temple dog, small framed images of Cernunnos, a statue of a forgotten cat goddess discovered in Florida, and a small totem pole. Not necessarily deity-ish, but certainly quasi-religiously, I also have my interpretation of a Day of the Dead altar, and so there is a Mexican art influence over part of my space. (My interest in Indian and Mexican religion is based on curiosity and interest, and not on biology or upbringing.)
So! Your turn. :) What deity-type statues do you have in your home?

Date: 2008-01-25 07:36 pm (UTC)We also have a four-faced bust of Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn next to our front door. Fittingly, north-facing Winter is currently covered in ice.
That's about it for statuary. There are a few paintings / prints, but no more 3-D stuff.
