experiments in cooking
Jan. 22nd, 2008 11:47 pmOk, so...
I am a timid eater. So much so that I had quite the inner struggle ordering local cuisine instead of a nice safe hamburger when I was in New Orleans. The fact that I have more or less perfected an easy version of jambalaya that is not uber-spicy is a small miracle, and the belief of my landlady that I really like spicy food is one of the stronger misconceptions about me I've run into in quite some time.
I've become quite fond of making stir-fry-ish sorts of meals, and the spice mixes I prefer are heavily salty. (Not news to those who know me: I eat too much salt.) So tonight, I decided to deliberately not use salt. Instead, I opened another of those things purchased on clearance and promptly set aside because the firm admonition that it was best used on roasted chicken had rather intimidated me.
But! I am posting this in part to praise and advertise this spice mix. it is Herbes de Provence by Spice Appeal, and it includes thyme, rosemary, savory, basil, lavender, "and other herbs and spices". The result is a very light, very garden salady sort of flavour, and made for a very enjoyable experimental meal.
This was accompanied by a cup of 'Christmas Black Leaf Tea' (from Ikea) (on clearance, so rush on out to your local Ikea now!) that is a mix of black tea, orange peel, rosehip, apple, cinnamon, cloves, and...oh, goodness. I forget! I brewed mine longer than I should have, but I still recommend the blend.
And now, off to sleep. Worked another double today, am scheduled in at 8AM tomorrow. Er, today. Yay me!
