"Do you mind if we pray together?"
During the time in which I was wholeheartedly dedicated to the church, I can't remember anyone ever asking me this question in such an open warm manner.
"Of course not."
The four of us joined hands, and as my lover's father started to speak, I felt a gentle pressure against my left leg. Bones' dog had joined the circle.
I only vaguely heard the words being said. I looked down, and was reminded of Hades running into the room to join us as Peachey held my dying chinchilla in his hands. He was performing Reiki on Bella. Hades leapt up to the kitchen table to be close to him, purring loudly.
"Animals are always attracted to this," Peachey explained.
Was Ursa responding to something similar?
If pushed, I would describe myself as being more Quaker than anything else. Which is a far cry from the singing and praying by rote that I've seen in so many churches. It's hard to not feel jaded, to think just about everyone traipsing off to Sunday service is doing it wrong. Such a belief is, after all, what drove me away from organized religion years ago.
I reached down, scritched the dog's head, and wondered.
