[livejournal.com profile] k2rider78, I believe, asked me to write about the best cup of coffee I've ever had.

Here's the dealio:

When I was a pre-teen, I remember that my family went to the shore for a weekend-or-so getaway. And my father had left a cup of coffee on a counter.

Dear lord, it smelled amazing. AMAZING. It was ambrosia in a styrofoam cup.

So I took a sip.

ewewewewewewew.

It was black and bitter and how could anything that smelled so amazing taste so damn bad??

I have been on a quest ever since to find something that tastes anywhere close to as good as that cup of coffee smelled...and I still have the vague hope that I will someday be able to take my coffee with no cream or sugar. I've cut back on the additives a lot, but I'm not there yet.

I like my coffee chewy-strong, oh yes I do. And the hands-down best coffee I've had is Vietnamese coffee, which I discovered at a now-defunct (I think) restaurant south of South Street in Philly, somewhere around Catherine Street. I think.

And this is why I love Cafe du Monde coffee so much and will squirrel away as much of it as I can as often as I can.

...Oops, hit send by accident. D'oh! Ah well, so it's a few mins early...

State of the Dusti:
I don't think I'm out of words yet. (And the intarwebz scream in terror.) But the focus I've admittedly had trouble keeping for Blogathon is growing progressively more scattered.

*looks at clock*

Really, not that much more to do. I just need to stay on top of my schedule.

Ever read my poem "Caffeine"?

Caffeine, copyright 2001 by Christopher Walsh

A shell, wrapped around the sleeper
Revved up, shot through, with fake power
Vibrating against what's within
Unable to touch the part of you
That really should be resting
(and already half-is) --
A drug-caused disconnect
Shown in too-bright eyes
And too-wide yawns.

I've gotten fond of Thai iced coffee. Their sweetness helps. Sweet-Tooth Me approves.

I've also had a Cubano once. And I'd learned of the Cubano in a Caitlin R. Kiernan ([livejournal.com profile] greygirlbeast) novel, and based on that I figured I'd like that, too.

My first exposure to coffee! It was the late 80s. I might even have been in high school yet. I had it at an outdoor company gathering hosted by my mom's employer. And I had it black. And I HATED IT.

I became a surprisingly militant anti-coffee person. Wouldn't drink it for almost all of the 1990s. In college I had tea and cola and caffeinated Slurpees. In Hermiston (1997-2000) I expanded that to include the chocolate-infused Cokes made by the pharmacy fountain across the street from my office (yes we had a pharmacy in a fountain). But not coffee. The closest I'd get to it was smelling the bags of coffee beans that my cousin Amy -- who now goes professionally as "Max" (I call her "Maximy," combining both names) -- would give as gifts, since she was a barista at the time. They did smell good.

It took call center work here in Portland to get me into drinking actual coffee. Even then I'd cut it, putting some hot chocolate mix into the coffee. (Are you surprised I like mochas? I liked it later when Questionable Content described a mocha as "an espresso with training wheels.") But I do let it touch my lips now. It's one of my steps into a larger world.

An expresso with training wheels? Yeah I can see that...

... and a donation. I'm finally getting around to giving to everyone I've been trying to follow. :) My hubby actually got a good deal on Vietnamese coffee via one of the Amazon marketplaces. I will ask him (when we are both awake at the same time) about it. If you don't hear from me by Tuesday, the blogathon ate my memory, so send me an email or message or something. :)

Oh - do you need a receipt for the donation? email? :)

Oh yay! Thank you, angel!

A receipt would be best for now...elionwyr@yahoo.com

I have yet to find the 'best' cup of coffee because coffee in all it's many forms appeals to me. I prefer mine black nothing in it. I have tried it with cream and sugar but like it without. I know I'm in the minority but that's ok I'm used to that ;)

And I guess the thing I enjoy the most about drinking coffee is sharing it with friends. So for me your coffee post with your friends comments is almost like sharing good times over some java.

I want to enjoy coffee black. It's still a goal.

La Columbe coffee, roasted in a small factory right off Rittenhouse Square.
If you really feel like splurging, Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee. It's only...around $60 a pound. Be indulgent and get two. ;)

If I could find a big enough place that's pet friendly, we could be roommates.....just a thought. Not in the house I'm in now. No - that one - needs to go away. Along with the man currently living in it.
But - just a thought to consider. I'm not big on roommates, but for you I'd gladly make an exception. :)
