Whilst applying for a job on Careerbuilder.com, I just came upon the following:

Completing the following fields is optional.
24 percent of employers surveyed said that they had hired a member of their staff based on their social-networking profile. Providing a link to your blog / profile may help set your resume apart from other candidates.

(You have the option of listing more than one website/blog/whatever.)

*backs away from the computer screen sloooowly*

You may want to go back and check the security on some of those old LJ posts...

Oooohhhkaaaayyy!

the phrase "no fucking way" springs to mind.

otoh, anybody could Google me and find things, so maybe it is better to direct them to the "safe" version, in the hope that they won't bother searching for the others.

And this is why I am cautious about every single consonant or vowel I say or type.

It's not paranoia... they really are out to get us.

Well at least they cannot say that they did not warn you. I think that is why many folks today are adding additional profiles for various interests. Which when you think about is not a bad idea at all.

It all depends on what kind of employer you're applying to, and what kind of social networking you've done.

When I get a new customer or a new employee candidate, I generally do a quick search.

I've never completely ruled out an employee based on what I could find out on them (without going through a more involved background check, which I haven't yet felt the need to do, although it is SOP for a lot of other companies in my industry), and most of what I learned was nothing compared to what I could learn working with them for a couple of days, but it gave me some idea of what they were about.

Of course, I'm also a lot more tolerant of things than other employees might be, so to me it's just a way to get to know them better and see if they're a good fit.

By the same token, I also realize there's a good chance potential customers are googling me and seeing what they can find out. I haven't gone back over anything written prior to starting the business, but I have filtered what I've written since.
