1. The keeper was being sloppy.
2. Give me a lion over a tiger any day. Lions are social critters. Tigers aren't. More keepers get hurt by tigers than lions.
3. ...A *shovel*?? Well...all things considered...I don't know that I'd praise the volunteer (who I HOPE wasn't in the cage with tiger and keeper)...but you use what you've got available..
4. Another article does state that the tiger will not be punished for being a wild animal.

Tiger bites keeper at Sacramento Zoo

A Sacramento Zoo employee was hospitalized Sunday after he was attacked by a 325-pound Sumatran tiger named Castro.
Chad Summers, a 30-year-old zookeeper, was listed in fair condition at UC Davis Medical Center.

Zoo director Mary Healy said Summers was treated for puncture wounds on his neck, right shoulder and left leg. He also suffered a laceration on the bridge of his nose. "We were extremely fortunate," she said.

The incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. when Summers was preparing to feed Castro in a holding den, Healy said.

"The tiger was partway out a door which had been left unlocked when it met Chad," she said.

Healy said a zoo volunteer, Hannah Gorski, 23, standing nearby, grabbed a shovel and "banged" Castro on the head a couple of times.

That distracted the tiger, and it backed away from Summers, who had fallen to the floor, Healy said. The tiger backed into the den, allowing Gorski to secure the door.

"Our veterinarian was there and he helped with first aid," Healy said.

The Sacramento Fire Department got a 911 call for first aid at 8:27 a.m., said fire Capt. Dave Whitt.

The tiger was never outside the cage, which is in a secured building, Whitt said.

At the time of the attack, the zoo's other Sumatran tiger, a female named Bahagia, was in the rare feline exhibit area, Healy said.
