people-watching
Nov. 21st, 2002 10:44 amI noticed them sitting together, huddled against the cold.
He was sitting on an oversized duffle bag; she was lying across his lap; and together, they turned their faces from the November morning.
I fingered the bit of money in my pocket and worried, and wondered. Were they homeless? Should I go over and ask if they were ok, did they want to go into the coffee shop across the street, get warm, get something to eat?
Trapped by indecision, I couldn't decide whether or not to act on the impulse.
He moved. A pack of cigarettes appeared. The glow of his cigarette was kept carefully away from her.
I looked away, watching for my bus.
I glanced back.
I saw him smile as she moved her face towards him. Their foreheads touched, and then their mouths met in a kiss too private and perfect to watch.
They weren't homeless at all.
