There is a series of books by Orson Scott Card called Alvin the Maker.
In the first book, a strong premise is introduced: when Alvin feels the Unmaker (interpret that as you will - evil, hate, destruction, Satan) working, he's compelled to create. It's instinctive; it makes him feel better; it chases away the power of unmaking.
While waiting these past few days..waiting for the doctor to see Jason...waiting by his bed while he dozed off after surgery..waiting at home for my father-in-law to get ready so we could return to the hospital...waiting for a friend to arrive last night who was staying the night...I found solace in creating. In my case, it was just cross stitch - a belated Christmas gift for Shyryu.
I brought my beloved books and his childhood favorite stuffed animal..clean clothes..a robe...but what he asked for was his sketchbook. Even when in pain and doped up on morphine, he's driven to create.
I find it interesting.

Date: 2002-01-09 08:48 am (UTC)my hunny is quite into making stuff, he can draw very well but is really hooked on playing his bass or the guitar
I don't know if he'd go as far as doing it while on heavy pain meds though!
I am sure that making things help him pass the time, as hospitals are very boring places
cross stiches are so pretty, I hvae never finished one because i have little patience--but it is kinda fun working on one!
Hope he recovers well and SOON!
As it turned out..
