Katrina anniversary

I neglected to post this yesterday, though it was much on my mind..
August 29th, 2006 is when the levees failed and we were reminded that it's not a question of, 'Will we lose New Orleans?" but of when.

For those of us not personally or physically affected, it's hard to imagine what life was like there 4 years ago. [livejournal.com profile] hurricanegrrl has posted an not-yet-complete-but-still-amazing account of her experiences that I can't recommend highly enough.

What we learned - from Katrina, from 9/11, from the power blackout in NY - is that this is how our worlds threaten to end. It can happen, unexpectedly, terrifyingly, and we can't afford to forget it.

And oh, New Orleans. I fell for you hard years ago, and I still long to go back. Even now. Even as you continue to struggle back to what you once were.
