on kissing (with apologies to sophie)

You will know everything you need to know about me when we kiss.

It's not something you expect to hear from a man.

It's not something you hear and take seriously. It's too close to Cher bouncing around a video screen with Winona and Christina crooning in the background.

It's a line. It's just a line.

And then I started thinking through the sentiment, comparing kisses from my past.

- The one who kissed from too great a height for too long a time, until my neck cramped from being held at such an angle; standing on my toes, the discomfort should have been a clue.

- The passionate kiss hello that made my vision go grey with desire.

- The kisses that somehow never quite fit; too open, too wet, too filled with mismatching rhythms.

- Kissing in her car - the secret softness of her mouth, and me too shy and skittish.

- The unexpected kiss that made our lips a battlefield, that left me exhausted and suddenly, disappointingly, sober.

- The shy kiss goodnight, returned, that caused me to walk in a dazed circle as she softly closed the door behind her.

...With Cher singing in my head, I kissed him. And it wasn't magic. It wasn't fire. It was warmth and welcome and Home, and I smiled against his lips. We had lifetimes to explore between us, and yet maybe this really is all I need to know.

"Hello."

Yeah, kisses are pretty key. I've never had a serious relationship with someone who could not kiss passably. It's not the only thing, but it's important.
